Program

We are going to be volunteering with a small, locally run program called Tinkuy Peru. The word "tinkuy" is a quecha (the ancient language of the region) word that means "meeting in the highlands". The program helps run two orphanages, two English schools, and is currently working on an environmental conservation program. The Tinkuy Peru program is run by a Peruvian couple, who have lived in Huancayo through many generations, and is supported by volunteers from Europe and the United States.

The goals of Tinkuy Peru are to improve the lives of the poor in Huancayo through the following:

• Teach English to children and adults to increase global understanding.

• Set up and maintaining an orphanage to care for local underprivileged children in order to improve their future and community conditions.

• Encourage solidarity and a “cooperative community” by providing a free and basic education to the people of Huancayo.

• Fight hunger and poverty by cooperating with locals to obtain resources and feeding the orphaned children.

• Promote hygiene and safety through education.

• Improve agricultural conditions through horticulture and animal breeding.

• Improve environmental awareness and sustainability through education.

• Building self-esteem and a sense of community through interactive learning.

We hope to become an important part of this program. Please feel free to visit the Tinkuy Peru website and learn more about the organization by clicking on the link below....
